Abstract: Interactive musical improvisation based on, but clinically enhancing, what the child offers, often reveals latent abilities and musical talent in severely handicapped children that can be guided to stimulate new developmental possibilities and motivation for change. Through frustration severely physically handicapped children from infancy easily lose the desire to use their full mental and physical potential. Detailed analysis and tape-recordings from 3 case studies show how musical interaction clinicallyy-directed can re-awaken and motivate hidden talents, stimulate enjoyment of the creative process and sense of achievement.
