Abstract: Discusses the neglect of nonverbal communication in psychiatric research as a consequence of the deinstitutionalization of Italian psychiatric patients mandated by the 1979 reform laws. It is noted that the traditional psychiatric institutions were equipped with art therapy workshops in which patients produced artwork that offered clues to their psychic world that psychiatrists could not have obtained through verbal communication with them. It is concluded that Italian psychiatrists must find new ways to communicate with patients outside the rigid, unimaginative frame of reference represented by the spoken or written word.
