Journal/Book: Annales Medico Psychologiques. 1982; 140: 493-507.
Abstract: Analyzes the rites of the Brazilian carnival, emphasizing the importance of the carnival as a mechanism for psychic stabilization responsible for the reduction in psychiatric cases. The origins of the Brazilian culture and the integration of African folklore and mysticism with European folklore are discussed. In tracing the origins of carnival rites, the author points out the significant role played by the dynamic and contagious rhythm of the music, which generates an unrestrained atmosphere in which enthusiastic singing and dancing act as elements of catharsis, liberation, compensation, and integration.
