Art therapy: Psychotic expression and symbolism |
Journal/Book: Arts in Psychotherapy. 1981; 8: 15-23.
Abstract: Presents a brief historical review of the symbolism revealed in the art work of psychotics and schizophrenics. The creation of magical worlds that the psychotic considers less threatening than the real world is illustrated with a series of drawings done by a 35-yr-old White male and by an 11-yr-old White female. It is suggested that as long as the magical worlds remain inaccessible, the psychotic patient cannot be treated by the therapist. Through the graphic depiction of these worlds, the therapist may make contact with the patient and use the depicted world to help the patient explore and accept reality. (7 ref)
