Acupuncture in the treatment of low back pain and sciatica

Abstract: lt has been well documented that long term results in the treatment of low back pain and sciatica do not depend on the method used in as far as recurrent pain, residual neurological defects, disability at work and during leisure time are concerned. Surgery gives better short term results but is indicated only in 10% of cases. Thus most patients will need a reliable and simple method to alleviate pain and to shorten the time needed for rehabilitation.The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of acupuncture and closely related transcutaneous nervous stimulation (TNS) in the treatment of this common condition.
