Activating a psychogeriatric group

Abstract: Describes therapeutic efforts used successfully in group activities to help elderly men and women (previously institutionalized and currently living in domiciliary care residences) to enjoy the "here and now" of their daily lives. Techniques included a selection of music from the 30's, gentle physical exercise, exercises of the imagination, round robin story telling, free association word games, physical contact, coffee and cookies served by the women residents, and videotaping of the session. By the 2nd session there was extensive evidence of developing group cohesiveness. Qualities helpful to therapists engaged in work with psychogeriatric patients are noted.
