Abstract: Twenty healthy indivi-duals (group I) and 20 patients of CAD with old myocardial infarction (group II) between the age of 40 60 years, were admiistered essential oil f garlic for a period of 3 months in the daily dosage of essential oil extract from 1 g of raw garlic per kg. Body weight. Blood samples were collected initially, then after every month for a period of 5 months.Garlic had a predominant action on the fibrinolytic activity which increased-by 130% in group I and by 83% in group II. In control subjects garlic increased the alpha lipoprotein by 31% (p < 0.001) and-decreased the beta-pre-beta fraction by 7.5% (p < 0.01), while no significant effect was found in CAD group. Serum cholesterol and triglycerides: decreased in group I but in the patients of CAD there was a tendency toward a rise by garlic feeding, although both these changes did not reach a statistically significant level. The :possible role of garlic in the prevention of the athero-sclerosis has been discussed in the light of its effect on fibrinolytic activity and blood lipids.
