Abstract: 12 rabbits were fed cholesterol (0.5 g per kg body weight) for an initial period of four months. Cholesterol was then discontinued and they were divided into two groups of 6 each Group I was fed stock diet while group II was given essential oil extract equivalent of 2g raw garlic/kg body weight daily. Garlic feeding has more or less reversed cholesterol induced atherosclerosis and the grading of atheroma decreased to a mean of 0.5 as compared to 2.1 in the control group. Garlic feeding initially increased serum cholesterol and then sharply decreased it. It also significantly increased fibrinolytic activity and decreased Beta: Alpha ratio. Serum triglycerides were also decreased. The role of garlic in reversion of atherosclerosis is discussed.
