Directive teaching and the music therapist as consultant |
Journal/Book: Journal of Music Therapy. 1977; 14: 17-26.
Abstract: Describes music therapy as a discipline of clinicians whose primary role is to work directly with handicapped persons; however, a variety of other roles may be filled by the registered music therapist. One of these, the therapist as consultant, is illustrated by a special project at the Rainey Institute of the Cleveland Music School Settlement. After analyzing student learning problems, the consultant helped teachers to discover ways of motivating students and to devise programs of effective individualized instruction. This 5-yr Directive Teaching Program is described in detail: its basic ideas, its procedural steps (which the teachers were taught to use in planning their approach to a student's learning problem), and its results. Despite certain difficulties, teachers in the Institute have found these techniques, developed in collaboration with the music therapist, very helpful and have continued to use them after the formal close of the 5-yr Program.
