Abstract: Institute of Systematic Medical Therapy and Medical Hydrology of the University of Rome Dir. Prof. M. MESSINI In another paper we reported an the actual viewpoints of prominent European rheumatologists and hydrologists about thermal therapy of rheumatic conditions. We now wish to complete our contribution to the scientific works of the Sixth Congress of the Association of American Spas with a study an thermal agents (thermomineral waters and muds) most commonly used in European Thermal Stations. Our chief purpose being the discussion of the nature of said agents their biological action and their use in the practise. Far be it from us to presume that our opinions will be generally accepted we therefore consider it necessary to convey our thoughts to the colleagues who so kindly invited us to attend this meeting. We want above all to establish some contacts between American hydrological studies and the scientific address of our School in this field. This in the hope to lay grounds not only for future uninterrupted exchanges of ideas and experiences but also for immediate fruitful discussion in the belief that debates are extremely valuable for the progress of science. It is well known that thermo-mineral waters and muds (peloids) are commonly used in the therapy of articular conditions. Mineral waters can however be administred by os in articular diseases in view of their anti-uric-acid properties and their stimulating effect an metabolism.
