THE COMPARATIVE EFFECT OF BRONCHODILATOR AGENTS ADMINISTERED BY INHALATION: A CONTROLLED CLINICAL STUDY

This clinical study was undertaken to: (1) determine the effectiveness of 3 bronchodilator drugs administered by inhalation to patients with chronic asthma or pulmonary emphysema or both (2) present an improved method for the comparative evaluation of several bronchodilator drugs. A Latin square experimental design was utilized to secure statistically significant data from a minimal number of patients. Bronchodilator activity the BD Index was measured as the change in the FI Index following administration of the test drugs. The degree o f functional impairment the FI Index was recorded as the average per cent of predicted values for the vital capacity maximum breathing capacity and 3-second expiratory capacity. The following conclusions appear justified: 1. The 3 drugs utilized in the study have a better bronchodilator action than the control substance normal Saline. 2. Eight or 50% of the patients had their best objective response to drug A (Isuprel). The data however did not Show a statistically significant difference between the average bronchodilator action of the 3 drugs utilized in the study (Isuprel Aerolone and JB251). 3. Mild "dizziness the only side effect, was observed in 2 patients following administration of drug A. 4. Thirteen, or 81%, of the patients were unable to pick the drug which gave them the best objective results. ___MH
