Activated Autologous Blood for the Therapy of Habitual Abortions - Results of a Pilot Study |

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the influence of activated autologous blood therapy on various immune parameters and the clinical course of pregnancy in patients with habitual abortions. Design: In a prospective study patients with recurrent spontaneous abortions were treated with activated autologous blood, and immune parameters were investigated during treatment. The clinical course of the patients was compared with a historical control group. Patients: 36 patients with ³2 abortions after excluding nonimmunological causes. Main Outcome Measures: Significant changes in the investigated immune parameters and birth of a healthy child. Results: The immunological investigations revealed significant changes of lymphocyte subpopulations, complement parameters, mitogen stimulation, and the amount of immunoglobulins. No side effects were recorded. Conceptions from June 1994 until November 1995 (22 intrauterine and one extrauterine pregnancy) showed the following course: 19 (86%) live births, 2 (9%) spontaneous abortions, and 1 (4%) artificial abortion. Conclusions: Activated autologous blood therapy induces measurable changes of the immune system without side effects and seems to be promising tot further investigations in the treatment of recurrent spontaneous abortions.
