Report on the llth Swiss Conference on Phytotherapy

Abstract: The llth conference of the Swiss Medical Society for Phytotherapy (SMGP) on the 21 November 1996 in Baden dealt with a highly actual subject, phytotherapy for elderly people. According to the latest population statistics the number of the elderly in Switzerland increases overproportionally. This also is true for Germany. Health conditions of the elderly in future will substantially influence the expenses of the public health services. The significance of preventive and therapeutic measures in geriatric diseases will increase quantitavely. Phytotherapy in the elderly was discussed in the course of the conference concerning political aspects as well as aspects of efficacy and safety. The main topics of the conference were: the substitution of benzodiazepines by herbal remedies for the treatment of BPH, the treatment of dementia with Ginkgo biloba extracts, the effects of Panay ginseng, the use of Boswellia serrate extracts in chronical inflammatory diseases, and the significance of flavonoids for the reduction of the risk of coronary heart disease.
