Abstract: The supportive use of mistletoe preparations in cancer patients is based on 1 . the ingenious idea of R. Steiner,2. 80 years of clinical experiences in mistletoe therapy3. increasing intensity of scientific mistletoe research which has confirmed the idea of R. Steiner and led to an increasing acceptance of mistletoe therapy beyond the boundaries of anthroposophic and naturopathic medicine.The benefit for cancer patients consists in an increase in quality of life and survival and a better tolerability of chemo- or radiotherapy. Out of 41 controlled clinical trials, 39 studies argue in favour of the efficiency of mistletoe therapy; 11 studies also have a convincing quality.Careful evaluation of the cytotoxic, apoptosis inducing, immunomodulating and immunoprotective effects of mistletoe preparations enables a better understanding of the mode of action and a more effective and pointed use as a supplement in oncology.
