Misteltherapie bei malignen Systemerkrankungen

Abstract: Additional application of mistletoe preparations in systemic malignant diseases is based on decades of good clinical experience, but now confronted with the fear of a possible stimulation of malignant cell growth. This hypothesis, however, could not be verified by in vitro or animal experiments nor by clinical studies. In vitro experiments demonstrate distinct cytotoxic effects of mistletoe preparations on different lymphoma or leukemia cell lines. In several animal experiments, significant inhibition of cancer growth and metastasis, longlasting cancer response or increase in survival could be obtained in malignant lymphomas and leukemias. A clinical study in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia resulted in a distinct increase of survival by the additive application of mistletoe. Also in single case documentations, cancer remission or remarkable long survival time were demonstrated. Finally, the fact of frequently occuring spontaneous regression in malignant lymphomas as well as the success of fever therapy emphasize that immunologic treatments might be useful just in malignant systemic diseases.
