Predicting of UV Sensibility by Colorimetric Data of the Skin

Journal/Book: Biologic Effects of Light 1995 (c) 1996 Walter de Gruyter & Co. Berlin New York - Printed in Germany. 1996;

Abstract: Institut fur Medizinische Balneologie und Klimatologie der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München Marchioninistrasse 17 D-81377 München Introduction The most valid and quantitative way to determine UV-sensibility is checking the individiual UV-dose-response ("WUCHERPFENNIG-Erythemtreppe) that means applicating different UV-doses at small skinshapes today and checking the result tomorrow. But for many practical belongings it lasts too long waiting about 24 hours before getting the first results. So usually the doctors estimate the individual UV-sensitivity by "skin-types" checking visually the skin hair and eye color of the patient and asking for the individual experience with UV-radiation especially for the usual reactions by exposing the first time in springtime to natural sun for half an hour. From this the patients were attached to the 4 well-known FITZPATRICK-classes of skintypes. In figuie 1 and 2 there are shown results of comparing the estimates of skintypes by experienced dermatologic doctors on one hand and the results of UV-dose-response at next day on the other hand documented in one of the most famous dermatologic university clinics in Germany. The are just poor accordances: referring to 4 categories Type I (always burns never tans) ( 0 050 mJ/cm2 0 050 mJ/cm2 < Type II (always burns sometimes tens) ( 0.075 mJ/cm2 0.075 mJ/cm < Type III (sometimes burns always tens) ( 0.100 mJ/cm2 0.100 mJ/cm2 < Type IV (never burns always tens) within 113 subjects there were just 27 4 % concordances! So another method should be found to give ? better concordances and ? results within some minutes. hl
