"Psychological issues in hospice music therapy": Errata. Special Issue: International music therapy

Journal/Book: Music Therapy Perspectives. 1995; 13: 55.

Abstract: Presents introductory material that was inadvertently omitted from the original article by T. M. West ( Music Therapy Perspectives , 1994, Vol 12(2), 117-124). (The following abstract of this article originally appeared in PA, Vol 82:30702.) Describes the phases, tasks, and psychological issues of dying to provide a framework for organizing music therapy approaches to dealing with these issues. The author discusses the role of grief and spirituality in hospice music therapy. The roles and goals of the music therapist are considered and the role of music is described. Music therapy techniques and interventions are also addressed. An understanding of the psychological processes unique to death and dying is essential for effective music therapy treatment in hospice. The therapist can select supportive music and interventions by tracking the patient's movements through phases and tasks of dying. Both quality of life and ease of death may be supported by music therapy as part of hospice care. The case of a 74-yr-old woman with cancer who received 5 music therapy sessions is described to illustrate these points.
