Abstract: Autism is an extremely rare developmental disorder involving specific social, communicative and motoric peculiarities. A case study of a 9 year old autistic girl is presented. This girl has not been able to produce any linguistic signs for communicative purposes. A training program based on a simple symbolic gesture is applied to instigate the use of gestures in an everyday setting. Within a training period of 6 months the girl showed first attempts to adopt the presented gesture into her behaviour in everyday settings. It is discussed how some progress in nonspeaking autistic children can be reached if an especially suited learning environment is provided.
