Abstract: Investigated the effect of musical excerpts on the evocation of values. In Phase I, a valid list of values (e.g., tenderness, beauty, freedom, violence) and a questionnaire about personal characteristics and psychopathology were developed and validated, and musical excerpts were selected from a variety of musical styles since the 1600's. 40 30-80 yr olds in the Netherlands with either major depression or depressive neurosis participated in the study. In Phase II, 44 patients with major depression or depressive neurosis listened to 16 musical excerpts twice, with an intervening period of 1-1.5 mo. Patients were asked to select from a list of values that they felt were elicited by the music. Statistical analyses showed that groups of musical excerpts evoked groups of values. Other variables rated to the values evoked by music included the type of depression, characteristics of the disorder, life events, recovery, music education, and music listening behavior.
