Abstract: Energy-rich quanta of the ultra-violet region which are absorbed by the blood may, dependent on the initial state, exhibit effects on the biological regulation in the diseased organism. Their use in case of anaemias is known from the lierature and is confirmed by us in casuistries. Based on statistics derived from groups of patients with arterial occlusion, diabetes mellitus, allergies and inflammations it is at the same time shown that in case of increases in haematocrit due to the uptake of uv-qunata a low but statistically significant hydraemia resp. decrease in haematocrit occurs which lasts for months. Since the haematocrit is the most important parameter for the viscosity of the blood a 1.4 to 3.3 per cent decrease in haematocrit might not be irrelevant for a clinical improvement by means of uv-radiation treatment of the blood. However, the change of the redox system as a result of the uptake of quanta and the formation of reactive species of oxygen as well as changes in the electrical charges of proteins has a much greater effect for the degree of peroxidation of the lipid micellae and the internection rate of the sprectrins and, thus, for the flexibility of the erythrocytes and the microcirculation. The increase in the anti-oxidative potential after uv-radiation treatment of the blood causes the long-term effect of the method and might also be the biological regulatory factor for the compensation of changes in haematocrit both up and down.
