Dissolution rates of herbal tea preparations

Abstract: Patient oriented medical indications and dosage of herbal drugs is an actual problem when utilising traditional herbal tea preparations. Flavonoids are considered to be one of the physiologically active components with diuretic effects. Besides controlling quality of plant material and chemical standardisation the bioavailability of active ingredients in the resulting drug preparations has to be guaranteed. Aqueous tea extracts obtained from a series of different medicinal plants showed only small quantities of hydrophilic flavonoids. By varying extraction temperature, time and particle size of the plant material it was possible to increase the flavonoid release into the aqueous extract. Due to these data it should be possible to evaluate the specific release of active principles from herbal tea preparations in relation to the specifications (I.e. particle size and extraction parameters) of the respective formulations.
