The Individuation Process and Music Therapy

Abstract: The paper discusses the individuation process facilitated in individual music therapy with children and adolescents who have emotional and behavioural problems. Musical processes and clinical techniques are illustrated by extracts from sessions recorded on audio or video tape. The issues of boundaries, containment and defences are discussed from both a musical and psychodynamic viewpoint. The concepts of the sense of self and of the 'well centre' as expressed in music therapy will also be discussed. The paper will be published by the BSMT later in l992, price on application.
