The intact horny layer provides in addition to mechanical protection a barrier against extraneous substances. This function of the horny layer is dependent on its elasticity since fissures and tears in a chapped and dried-out horny layer allow the entry of extraneous substances into deeper layers. The elasticity is determined by the content of fats and inorganic and organic salts as well as by the hydration state. Furthermore an intact skin contributes greatly to a feeling of bodily well-being through its appearance its supplenes and its softness [l 2 3]. Cosmetics therefore seek to increase skin humidity and thence skin elasticity with active substances. Skin humidity is principally regulated by lipids which occur in skin in the form of double membranes [4]. These are the spingolipids which are mostly to be found in the horny layer and the phospholipids which occur mostly in the deeper skin layers. For several years liposomes consisting of phospholipid double membranes have been employed in cosmetic skin care products with great success. There are numerous reports on the effects of liposomes after topical application on human and animal skin [5 6]. We have used comparable liposome formulations from various soya phospholipids to investigate whether liposomes from unsaturated soya phospholipids differ in their effect on skin hydration... hl
