Abstract: Description of history and application of Cortex Rhois aromaticae Radicis. Extracts of the drug have antibacterial and antiviral effects. The most interesting constituents are tannins, essential oil, Orcin-ß-D-glucoside and sterols. 15, 16-Dinorlabd-7-en-13-on, a component of the essential oil, is described the first time as plant constituent. Orcin-ß-D-glucoside is a suitable guiding component for the quality monitoring of Cortex Rhois aromaticae Radicis. In the last chapter a monography of the drug for the gerrnan pharmacopoeia has been proposed.
