Abstract: A finely ground mineral stone meal was introduced an the Federal German food market in 1986 that has since been banned from being sold as a foodstuff. Chemical analysis showed this meal to consist of finely ground natural gneiss containing a high proportion of silicic acid, aluminium oxide, potassium oxide, iron oxide and salts of many other trace elements. Our study aimed at examining the liberation of trace minerals during the digestive process by means of an in vitro study and to assess the possible contribution of this liberation towards meeting the requirements of the human body.Using a three-stage in vitro digestive model, we studied this mineral stone meals in respect of liberation of calcium, sodium, potassium, zinc, iron, aluminium, cadmium and lead.
