Clinical Experience with a Very Low Calorie Diet
Abstract: Under the conditions of this study, modified fasting is a safe therapeutic method for the treatment of obesity when the diet is composed of 33 to 50 g protein of high biological value (eg, egg albumin), 25 g carbohydrate, vitamins, minerals, and trace elements. Hospitalization during treatment is rarely necessary. Medical examinations, however, are required at regular intervals of 10 to 14 days. Therapy can last up to several months until normal weight is obtained. Liquid intake must be at least 3 L/d. With high temperatures and high humidity substantially larger amounts of liquid are required.
