Abstract: In the morbidity statistics of the industrial nations, chronic cardiac diseases or cardiac discomfort still take one of the first places. In the pharmacotherapy of cardiovascular diseases, phytotherapeutic agents play an important role in addition to chemically defined pharmacons. They generally show an established - well documented effectiveness and tolerance, which justify their use in the case of mild and moderate cardiac discomforts. In addition to cardiac glycosides, which should be used today in the form of standardized or adapted extracts or preparations, especially hawthorn and garlic are available for therapy or prophylaxis. In clinical studies, there was an effect for hawthorn discovered in the case of cardiac failure up to stage II according to NYHA.Forgarlic, effects have been discovered in several studies, which in their sum can counteract atherosclerosis: in this case, lipid-lowering and antihypertensive effects, antioxidative effects, rheological effects, like an inhibition of the thrombocyte aggregation, an improvement of the vascular elasticity as well as an inhibition of the b-hydroxy-b-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase must be mentioned. In clinical studies, it was possible to show direct antiatherosclerotic effects. Also for the artichoke, slight lipid-lowering effects, antioxidative effects as well an inhibition of the b-hydroxyb-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase are known, which lead one to assume, that the artichoke can be used for prophylaxis. In the article, the latest findings concerning the pharmacologic effects and the clinical effectiveness of both medicinal plants are presented.
