The power of images - New approaches to the anthropological study of images
Journal/Book: Anthropos. 2000; 95: Editions St-Paul, Perolles 42, CH-1700 Fibourg, Switzerland. Anthropos Inst. 189-199.
Abstract: People of different cultures European as well as non-European ascribe most incredible powers to images, which seem to transcend the material attributes, the dead matter of pictorial representations. How can one tentatively explain the seductive, suggestive, ''magical'' power of images anthropologically, from the point of view of image producers and perceivers? There are several approaches possible: analyzing widespread conceptions of power, of souls, of the ''magic'' of similarity, and the cognition and perception of the identity of representation and represented.
