Abstract: In 1899, Sigmund Freud was virtually unknown in America, and his new book, The Interpretation of Dreams, went unreviewed. A century later, his life and work were the subject of a major exhibition of the U.S. Library of Congress, and he appeared for the third time on the cover of Time magazine. This article describes a few of the intervening events.
