Delinquency

Journal/Book: Curr Opin Psychiatry. 2000; 13: 530 Walnut St, Philadelphia, PA 19106-3621, USA. Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. 563-568.

Abstract: While most antisocial children do not progress to an adult criminal debut, most with an early onset conduct disorder, drug abuse, and a serious arrest history, coupled with risks such as peer victimization and family problems such as alcoholism, physical abuse and poverty, do, in particular, the prevalence of youth gangs and school gun carrying poses a real threat to such high-risk adolescents and to the community at large. As with gangs, institutionalized peer group warehousing, such as summer camps and juvenile detention centres, exposes at-risk delinquents to high levels of deviant peer group experiences that accelerate their life course offending. Intensive, highly supervised multimodel treatments hold out some therapeutic hope, while traditional individual counselling is contra-indicated. Thus, forensic evaluations of high-risk young offenders should not contain treatment recommendations within settings that may unwittingly worsen delinquent outcomes. Curr Opin Psychiatry 13:563-568.
