Abstract: Embodiment is a promising new area for theory development, but several issues impair its evolution, including confusion over terminology and a lack of organization of existing literature. Embodiment is defined, based on the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty. Works of scholars and current debate about embodiment are summarized. Embodied meanings of illness are explored in terms of their relevance for nursing.
