Eliminating pseudoempiricism from psychology: A return to science |
Journal/Book: Scand J Psychol. 1999; 40: PO Box 2959 Toyen, Journal Division Customer Service, N-0608 Oslo, Norway. Scandinavian University Press. 93-94.
Abstract: I have been a great admirer of Jan Smedslund's efforts to overcome psychology's unreflective acceptance of empiricism. Even as I differ from Smedslund's axiomatic focus on the Psyche-Logic, and emphasize a historical, developmental general theoretical framework (Valsiner, 1985, 1997, 1998), I share with him the quest for conceptual clarification of what (and how) psychologists construct as their general knowledge. For that purpose, the socially accepted pseudoempirical research habits in psychology need to be eliminated.
