Abstract: With the recent advances in technologies and diagnostic studies, we have been able to identify individuals with hearing loss from various etiologies. In hospitals, evoked otoacoustic emission (EOAE) and auditory brain stem response (ABX) are used to test newborns before they go home. According to the 1993 National Institutes of Health Consensus Statement of Early Identification of Hearing Impairment in Infants and Young Children, EOAE or repeat EOAE with ABX are used for initial screening of newborns and infants. The Joint Committee of Infant Hearing 1994 Position Statement (American Speech and Hearing Association, 1994) further addressed the specific indications for heaving evaluation. Referral for evaluation is required in those who fail either of the above tests. Early diagnosis allows physicians and audiologists to provide these children with assistive devices (i.e., hearing aids), special educational classes or surgical treatment to ensure the delivery of adequate auditory input for normal language development.
