Abstract: The epidemiology of suicide was studied in the county of Vasterbotten in northern Sweden, to serve as a base for the development of preventive strategies. The suicide data covered the years 1952-1995, and especially converging tendencies, dynamics among risk groups, regional patterns, and suicide methods were examined. The results showed major fluctuations in suicide rates during the late 1970s and the 1980s. During the 1990s an equalizing trend was found for national and local rates (especially among men) and rates in different regions in the county. Small tendencies towards an equalization of suicide rates between men and women were found. For age groups a diverging trend emerged, suggesting even greater significance of increasing age as a risk factor for suicide during recent years. With regard to suicide methods both men and women increasingly used non-violent methods, although with distinct age patterns. The results are discussed from a preventive point of view.
