Abstract: This article uses Fairbairn's object relations theory as a framework for understanding the process of Christian conversion. The basic principles of Fairbairn's object relations theory and identity development are outlined, followed by a review of previous applications of object relations theory to religion. Finally, the process of Christian conversion is described in terms of object relationship with Jesus, and this description is compared with various New Testament explanations of conversion. The application of object relations theory to human relationship with Jesus illuminates the foundational role Christ plays in the identity development.
