Abstract: This article attempts to relate what is currently known regarding the brain's involvement in language processing during the early years of life. This article focuses on the event-related potential (ERP) as a means to study the neuroelectrical correlates of language in the brains of infants and children. After reviewing general information concerning ERPs and language, this presentation relates how neonatal ERP measures of phonetic discrimination predict later language and reading abilities.
