Emotional aspects of hearing loss

Abstract: In order to successfully manage the education and adjustment of individuals with hearing loss, clinicians need to be sensitive to the emotional aspects of hearing loss. For hearing parents of children who are deaf and for adults who are deaf there is a grief reaction, and some aspects of clinical management must be devoted to grief work. Hearing loss also affects the family system, and clinicians must devote some time and energy to all family members-a truly family-centered approach that allows for the expression of feelings will in the end provide the best outcomes for individuals with hearing loss.
