Determinants of language production as content in a dialogue

Journal/Book: Z Psychol. 1999; 207: Im Weiher 10, D-69121 Heidelberg, Germany. Johann Ambrosius Barth Verlag. 55-86.

Abstract: Language production is influenced both by global determinants (e.g., the relationship between the interlocutors, their goals etc.) and aspects of the discourse itself as local determinants. Information relating to both groups of determinants influence the selection of the expressed information, and can themselves become the content of verbalization. The article explores the questions of which information becomes the content of an utterance and which aspects of the communicative situation determine this selection. Three role-playing experiments were conducted. Adolescents produced oral or written utterances in a conflict discourse with the mother. Potential global determinants (N = 131), local determinants (N = 61), or both (N = 53) were varied. The results show that the produced utterances are influenced both by global and local determinants and that the determinants of an utterance are not equal to the information units frequently verbalized. The contents of oral and written utterances differ only slightly from each other.
