Abstract: A brief history of hearing and a short review of the physics of sound is followed by An overview of how the ear works. The outer hair cell is the focus of particular attention because of its central role in the conversion of sound energy into neural energy used by the brain. Outer hair cells are found only in mammals and they represent a remarkable solution to the problems faced in detecting and analyzing sound.
