Genetic counseling for hearing loss

Journal/Book: Volta Rev. 1999; 99: 3417 Volta Place NW, Washington, DC 20007, USA. Alexander Graham Bell Assoc For The Deaf. 85-96.

Abstract: Considerable progress has been made during the past decade in understanding the biochemical and molecular characteristics of the hundreds of genes involved in the ear. The clinical effects of many of theses genes are now understood and practical applications of the new knowledge to improve diagnosis and treatment of hereditary hearing loss ave beginning to occur. These new discoveries in genetics apply nor only to children who are born with significant hearing loss, but also to adults who have later-onset, or progressive forms of hearing loss. Great improvements have been made in the accessibility of genetic counseling (Amos, Cunningham, Israel, & Marazita, 1992). If is increasingly important that parents, consumers with hearing loss, and professionals have a basic understanding of genetic concepts, the process of genetic counseling, and the social, psychological, educational, and medical impact of genetic conditions and traits. Although genetics is a complex field, it is important to understand the implications of a genetic diagnosis for a person with hearing loss, as well as how and when referrals for genetic evaluation and counseling are appropriate.
