Abstract: The leaves of the Latin American mate tree, Ilex paraguariensis St.-Hil., are used to prepare a stimulating beverage (mate tea). They contain caffeine and theobromine as well as caffeoylquinic acids (chlorogenic acids), triterpenoid saponines, flavonoids, vitamines, minerals and a small amount of volatile substances.Mute leaves are harvested from wild trees and from trees cultivated an plantations; the leaves are dried and given special treatment. Whereas mate tea is a very important beverage in some Latin American countries, it has never had a breakthrough in Europe unlike coffee and tea.A monographic entry of mate leaves as a herbal medicinal drug con be found in the DAC, they belong to the species urologicae NRF. Mate is considered to be a slimming remedy as well as a popular remedy for various illnesses.llex paraguariensis L., holly (the European relative of the mate), plays a certain role in consultations an toxic plants because of its red fruits; the leaves do not contain caffeine, they are supposed to have an anti-inflammatory effect, but at present they are of no importance as a herbal medicinal drug.
