Preparations with Essential Oil ContentBioavailability and Pharmacokinetics

Abstract: Preparations from herbal drugs containing essential oils are often used as expectorant medicine. Direct stimulation of the bronchial mucous membrane is supposed to cause the expectorant effect. Hitherto, pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of essential oil components in the respiratory tract have only been insufficiently analysed. Current investigations demonstrate good resorption after oral and cutaneous application of essential oil components. In general, renal, pulmonary, and biliary elimination of these compounds is reported. However, their elimination pathways differ significantly in quantitative means and depend an the chemical and physical properties of the respective compound. Therefore bioavailability has to be investigated for each potentially active substance.
