Abstract: We were concerned with prejudice between Bavarians and Worth Germans and examined in participants from both regions how closely the respective ingroup and outgroup is associated with negative attitudes. To assess the association between social category and generalized attitude, the newly developed ''Implicit Association Test'' (IAT) of Greenwald, McGhee and Schwartz (in press) was employed. Results of the IAT revealed that first names of each outgroup were judged more negatively than first names of each ingroup. Moreover, a positive correlation between the IAT measures and an explicit prejudice measure was obtained. Consequently, interindividual differences in the endorsement of prejudices are not only a function of correctional processes but also of the representation of prejudice. The findings suggest that group membership influences the representation of prejudice.
