Abstract: Although visual and hearing impairments are more prevalent in people with intellectual disability than in those without, these may remain unidentified and thus not treated. There is therefore a need for active screening for sensory impairment, especially in children and older adults. Initiatives taken so far are outlined, Because reliable epidemiological data are scarce, the necessity for more research on this subject is emphasized. Curr Opin Psychiatry 11:527-530.
