Abstract: The goal of the study reported was to illuminate the function of the shame affect in supervision and to help supervisors to deal appropriately with the phenomenon of shame, the ''Cinderella of affects''. To this purpose, Gestalt therapists were asked, in a group setting, to report events about personal experiences of shame (for example: social shame, shame about dependency, shame indicating a discrepancy between self and ideal-self) in supervision sessions. The results of the study show, how important the shame affect is for learning processes in supervision, in both a promoting and inhibiting way.
