Online bibliographic databases as sources of multilingual terminology

Abstract: Language professionals such as translators, terminologists, and documentalists are often not aware of the potential of online bibliographic databases as sources of multilingual terminology. This article examines the types and degree of multilingualness in selected important databases as to their usefulness in fulfilling the information-seeking needs of language professionals. Search strategies for term look-up and other uses are described, and the results of extensive trial searching are presented and critically discussed. Whereas results were generally positive, especially for solving difficult terminological problems for which context information is essential, cost might sometimes prove prohibitive.
