Abstract: Cochlear implant da,ices are highly effective in helping to prevent the consequences of auditory deprivation in congenitally deaf children. To judge the hearing abilities of young profoundly deaf children it is necessary to get more information than a pure tone audiogram can provide. Thus, the authors propose different criteria for evaluating hearing abilities in early infancy. These criteria are: I) audiological data, 2) auditory behaviour, 3) type and analysis of vocal production, and 4) language development up to the age of 2 years. They should help to determine whether the gain from hearing aids is sufficient or whether a cochlear implant ought to be considered. The authors emphasise the importance of the interval between chronological age and hearing age in the development of speech and language being only short. After 20 years of experience in Besancon, France, and Freiburg, Germany, the authors felt the need for a method of evaluating the speech and hearing abilities of young deaf children. For this study they chose three German children with different degress of profound deafness, whose early development was documented by regular, long-term video recordings of parent-child interaction. This material was used for their analysis, which was based on the criteria mentioned above. Although the numbers are small, they provide foundations for future work.
