Abstract: Brain Research is a rapidly expanding field of science. Neuroscience in general is one of the areas of contemporary biology characterized by a growing number of important achievements, not the least of which is the ordinary treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders. This promises a transformation of many current cultural, philosophical, ethical and legal standards. A number of noteworthy articles have recently been published dealing with these issues, and a pan-European research project on Ethical, Legal and Social Aspects of Brain Research has been launched by the European Commission. Curr Opin Psychiatry 11:575-580.
