Freie Radikale als Ursache von Umwelterkrankungen und deren Behandlung mit Antioxidantien

Abstract: Today the use of antioxidants (ß-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, zinc) is regarded as one of only a few possibilities to influence positively the metabolism of people with pollution burden. The effect of antioxidants consists in the reduction of free radicals which mostly play an important part in pathogenetic mechanisms and tumor development. Because of an increasing influence of xenobiotics on the human oganism the radicals burden however may be so imense that the antioxidative protective potential is not sufficient anymore opposite to the oxidative stress caused by the environment. According to the present knowledge, the essential trace elements selenium and zinc as well as antioxidative vitamins should represent an integral part of the prevention and treatment of environmental diseases.
