Induction of Apoptosis and DNA Stabilisation by Viscum album L.

Abstract: 'This article describes the cytotoxic mechanisms of mistletoe extracts, which involve a mistletoe lectin(ML)-mediated induction of the apoptotic cell death, a rapid permeabilisation of cell membranes and Generation of reactive oxygen intermediates by the viscotoxins (accidental cell death), and an ML-mediated chromosomal instability (with Generation of telomeric associations), resulting in apoptosis. On the other side, mistletoe extracts have a DNA-stabilizing effect, which remains to be further characterised. However, the biological effects of mistletoe are highly dependent on the mode of application and preparation of the extract. In conclusion, mistletoe may possess a regulatory influence on malignant cells and effector cells.
